True Multi-tenancy

The innovation that defines a true SaaS platform is a multi-tenant architecture, in which all customers share a single, common infrastructure and code base that is centrally maintained (like salesforce.com, Google, eBay, Amazon, etc.).

AtomSphere encapsulates all of the integration workflow, transformation rules, business logic validations and connector operations as metadata bound to a specific customer's account. This workflow configuration metadata is then deployed to an Atom, which acts on this metadata to perform the execution of an integration process.

Not All SaaS Is True SaaS

Many integration vendors that advertise themselves as a “hosted service” or “software as a service” simply charge customers to install, configure, and maintain their software as separate customer instances on the vendor’s hardware at the vendor’s location or using some cloud service such as Amazon EC2. Just as with traditional software, these “ hosted services” incur major expenses each time the software is upgraded, because previous customizations are lost and the application has to be redeployed for each customer.

Separating Build and Management From the Runtime Environment

Boomi's multi-tenant architecture provides a boundary between the platform to build integrations and the integrations that run on it. This approach makes it possible to create integration processes whose configuration is independent of where the integration process needs to run. Instead of generating integration code, you configure the integration options and rules as metadata, which functions as the Atom's "blueprint". Therefore integration processes can be easily modified, in many cases automatically, as the applications being integrated change.

Sophisticated Service Upgrades

Like other cloud-based platforms, Boomi handles all upgrades to the service and ensures continuing operations of all integration processes. This includes upgrades to both the Platform as well as the Atom. The Atom includes a sophisticated mechanism whereby it can update itself as dictated by the Platform. Even when the AtomSphere Platform is down for maintenance, the Atoms will continue to run. When ready, the Atoms will pause themselves, wait for any integration processes currently running to complete, and then walk through the update process to download the new code, apply the code, and if needed, re-start itself. Once complete, the integration processes resume normal operation. This update process typically completes in under 60 seconds. This process assures that both the Platform and the all of the Atoms are running the latest release of AtomSphere, and taking full advantage of the SaaS delivery model.
